Bennet is currently recognized as a village by the State of Nebraska and defined by Nebraska Revised Statute 17-201.
(1) Any municipality containing not less than one hundred nor more than eight hundred inhabitants as determined by the most recent federal decennial census or the most recent revised certified count by the United States Bureau of the Census incorporated as a village under the laws of this state.
Bennet Village is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of 5 members. Any person who is a citizen of the United States, a resident of the municipality at the time of his or her election, and a registered voter may be eligible to be elected to the Board of Trustees for a term of 4 years. (Provided that a Trustee’s term shall expire and the office will become vacant upon a change of residence from the municipality.)
The Village Board Chairperson is selected from its’ members at the first regular meeting of the Board of Trustees in December following a general election. The Chairperson presides at all meetings of the Board.
The members of the Board of Trustees take an oath to support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Nebraska, and faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of their office. All Trustees elected to office meet at the first regular meeting of the Board in December, organize, and appoint the municipal officers required by law.
The Board of Trustees have the power and duty to maintain the peace, promote good government, to prevent and remove nuisances and to enforce all ordinances.
